How did the rest of you fare today?

My day was a lot better than yours.

Numerous dents about the size of those holes.

Hey, at least it took hail to dent the Fiat, and not acorns, like my Fiesta!

I honestly don’t even know where I’d go to get acorn damage here! But yikes :(

Ouch. Every time I hear “hail”, I get the shivers and try to get into a garage as soon as possible. Even the little stuff freaks me out and I try to hide my car somewhere.

Sorry to see your loss. I wonder if they’ll try to fix it.

Shit, that sucks.

Friday, I drove through some hail somewhere in West Virginia? Maryland? Not sure, it was on I-68. No damage to the Prius, though.

I saw so many broken windows on the way home. I’ve never seen hail like this. One piece hit my spring-operated gas cap and opened it, and another piece sheared a chunk right off.

Oh geez!, my heart goes out to you. I was driving home and got caught in a short spate of vicious hail a few years ago. It just blew in and blew out, and left me with $3,000 worth of dents all over my car.

Add more Abarth with a plexiglass rear window!

That really sucks though. How’s the bodywork?

I’m super jealous of places that get interesting, extreme weather, be it -30, tornados, or whatever.

Until I see this.... Hope insurance takes care of everything without too much hassle. On a related note what would getting hit with hail like that do to a person? (assuming it can break off the metal of your gas cover)

We had a storm like this a couple years ago and some cars are still driving around with damage. Be cautious of all of the fly by night “Auto Hail Repair!” shops that pop up out of nowhere and take it to an established body shop even if that means waiting a while. I don’t know about CO but here in TX we don’t have to go where the insurance company first asks us to. One of my friends had a Mazda5 totaled from three shatter windows and the body panel damage. Another still has a cracked headlight and dings all over his Tacoma that he decided just give it character, though I imagine he’ll get it fixed up at some point. One had a white Golf TDI that we called the “golf ball” since it was completely covered in dents. This was right after dieselgate broke and they got the last laugh because after driving it for a year they got to hand in a Golf that needed $5k+ in body repairs to VW and take the payout as if it was new. Hang in there. Glad you’re OK. It sucks to see a cool car beat up like that but it’s repairable.

Yeah, if it’s like the Fiesta, it will need a new roof skin. So, since I’ll likely be in the same parking situation this Fall, dents it is.

Yeah, I had a $4k hail claim a few years ago that looked like much less damage than this. We’ll see how this works out.

Kinja'd!!!0

Good luck! Yeah I was looking it thinking it could be close to totaled considering the damage level and 500 Abarth resale values. Hopefully they do repair it, coz it would suck to see an Abarth go away from a hail storm. The storm here caused so much damage that a lot of companies were lowering the damage threshold that they were writing cars off at just to clear their back-log.

So sorry to hear about your Abarth :(

I was at work in Boulder right on that blue dot. I live right in there middle of the purple center of that storm. Thankfully the Miata was spared (it got hailed on pretty bad around this time two years ago) and the GTX was safe in the garage at home.

Eventually the Pacific Northwest will be the site of the greatest natural disaster in the history of mankind when an earthquake with a minimum magnitude of 9.0 strikes a massive, extremely unprepared area spanning from California to the Aleutian Islands, so there’s that. Does that count as weather?

I like to remind people of this when I tell them I moved here from Florida and they’re like “OMG!!!!! WEREN’T THOSE HURRICSNES SCARY?!?!?” It’s just some wind and rain, folks.

Kinja'd!!! AestheticsInMotion > Tristan
05/09/2017 at 02:11

Kinja'd!!!0

I realize this could come off as very insensitive, but the few earthquakes I’ve been present for (that were large enough to shake the ground, break buildings, etc.) have been an absolute blast.

But yeah magnitude 9.0+.... On a scale of tomorrow to the sun burning out how quickly are we talking about here..? Should I be readying myself for impending doom?

With something like that I can kinda just except the fact that I’ll be completely, 100% unprepared. The hail though? I can’t imagine waking up every day in winter or whenever hail like that forms and wondering “Hey is my car and/or body getting destroyed today?”

Good point, they’re close enough. I’ve been grading papers on the pros and cons of using Fahrenheit vs Celsius vs other for temperature notation so I guess it’s been on my mind!

Kinja'd!!! Tristan > AestheticsInMotion
05/09/2017 at 03:37

Kinja'd!!!0

I’ve never experienced an earthquake, but I can see how a 6.0 or less could be fun. I’ll do my best to sound smrt here... The frequency of massive Cascadia subduction zone earthquakes is as often as 100-300 years, and as little as 500-600 years. The last one was around 1700. The subduction zone off the Oregon coast has been eerily quiet, as the coastal ranges rise due to the ocean plate putting ever greater pressure on the continental plate. In other words, maybe we’re overdue, maybe we’re not. But it sure seems like the plates are storing up a lot of energy and people with bigger brains than me say it’s pretty likely in the next 50 years. The few things in Oregon that are built to seismic standards are built to bare minimums, a massive portion of the buildings are unreinforced masonry, the land all throughout the state is subject to liquefaction and landslides, most of the coastal towns will be destroyed by the tsunami, the Portland airport- the peoples’ only hope for relief- is build on unstable dredge soils, the only petroleum port for the state is, too... It’ll be bad. So far the biggest thing the gubmint has done to address the issue is to hide it as much as possible to prevent prospective businesses from being scared off.

It missed us by like one neighborhood. We got peas sized stuff that did nothing but the next subdivision over is where the carnage started.
